Allusion有“暗示”的意思，在文学手法上可以理解成“典故；用典”，英文的解释是An allusion is a figure of speech whereby the author refers to a subject matter such as a place, event, or literary work by way of a passing reference. It is up to the reader to make a connection to the subject being mentioned. 需要注意的是，你所引的这个典故，必须是为大部分人熟知的，过于冷僻就不佳。现在，因为流行音乐也深入人心，一些家喻户晓的歌词也可以看成是“典故”。

历史上，许多作家都懂得用典，比如中国的伟大词人辛弃疾，美国桂冠诗人T.S. Elliot 。不过，对他们的批评也值得注意，那就是他们的作品中，用典过多，会形成“曲高和寡”的印象；也正因为如此，他们的作品往往在一些圈子里面得到激赏。

下面来举些例子：

1. It’s no wonder everyone refers to Mary as another Mother Teresa in the making; she loves to help and care after people everywhere, from the streets to her own friends. 此处用Mother Teresa 来说明Mary的品质，Mother Teresa 修女是著名的天主教慈善工作者。
